Chapter Sixteen

CAMERON

“So your date went well, then?”

“We’re not dating, but yeah, we had a good time. I guess. Jared’s nice. Easy to talk to and we had fun.”

“That’s a good start. And um…” Cameron shifted uncomfortably; not quite believing what he was about to say, but after what he’d caught Zach watching after his date with Jared the other night, it probably should be said. “Um…so there’s no rush you know. I mean it’s okay to take your time…get to know each other before…”

Zach flicked a quick glance at him but was, thankfully, too distracted by handling the cyclic and fiddling with some other controls to be able to fully turn and glare at him.

Today was his day off, which worked out for the best because Marco Cortez called last night wanting to see Zach this morning in Cheyenne. Rather than drive there way too early this morning, Cameron—well Zach really—was flying them in the R22. This was the craft he used to teach Zach, because the pilot had to do the work in this one, unlike the rescue chopper, where the computer more or less flew it.

It had taken Cameron a long time to spend the insurance money from his mom and dad, but every time he went up in the R22, he knew he had made the right decision. His parents would have approved of spending the money their deaths provided him on the helicopter. Flying was his bliss, his sanctuary from the madness of the world.

“So, do you think you’ll go out again?” Curiosity burned through him, forcing the question out. Zach and Jared were none of his business, but he couldn’t stop himself from wondering. Zach had been tight-lipped ever since their first non-date date, only telling Cameron he’d had a good time but little other details.

He’d also seen Zach watching porn a few more times since the night he’d caught him. He seemed fascinated by it, but Cameron supposed it was similar to someone who’d been denied food, gorging themselves on anything edible when they suddenly came across it. Zach must have questions, but so far, he’d been completely unwilling to ask any.

“He said he’d call me when he’s back from New York.” Zach’s response was short and lacked any sort of excitement—and Cameron was disgusted with the little fist bump going on in his head at the idea the relationship with Jared was fizzling out already. He should be hoping for Zach to find happiness, even if it wasn’t with him.

They flew in silence for a while, Cameron watching proudly as Zach shifted the cyclic and maneuvered the pedals and collective skillfully. Some people were just born to fly.

“What do you think Mr. Cortez wants?” Zach asked after a while.

“No clue. We had an appointment to go down in two weeks for another briefing, so I’m guessing something unexpected has come up…something that couldn’t wait.”

Zach didn’t look away from the clear sky in front of him, but Cameron knew he’d see worry in his bright green eyes if he did.
